The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has installed and officially handed over a state-of-the-art 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) System to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, Anambra State.
The medical equipment was donated through the NNPC Foundation as part of the company’s healthcare support and corporate social responsibility initiatives aimed at improving access to quality healthcare services across Nigeria.
The commissioning and handover ceremony took place at the hospital’s Igwe Orizu ICT Centre in Nnewi, where officials described the project as a major breakthrough for medical diagnosis and treatment in the South-East region.
Speaking during the event, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Bashir Ojulari, said the intervention reflects the company’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system through strategic investments in medical infrastructure and modern technology.
According to him, the newly installed MRI system will help reduce the challenges faced by patients who often travel long distances in search of advanced diagnostic services.
He noted that access to modern diagnostic equipment is essential for effective healthcare delivery, especially in the detection and treatment of critical illnesses such as cancer, neurological disorders, spinal injuries, and cardiovascular diseases.
The Managing Director of the NNPC Foundation, Emmanuella Arukwe, revealed that the MRI machine and supporting accessories were delivered to the hospital in December 2025, while installation, calibration, and training of medical personnel were completed in April 2026.
She explained that the project forms part of the foundation’s broader healthcare intervention programme designed to support tertiary hospitals nationwide with life-saving medical equipment.
A 1.5 Tesla MRI machine is regarded as advanced medical imaging equipment capable of producing high-quality scans for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
The Chief Medical Director of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Joseph Ugboaja, expressed appreciation to NNPC Ltd and the NNPC Foundation for the donation, describing it as a significant boost to healthcare delivery in Anambra State and the entire South-East region.
Ugboaja assured that the hospital management would ensure proper maintenance and effective utilization of the facility to benefit patients and medical professionals.
The donation is expected to improve access to advanced diagnostic services for thousands of residents within Anambra and neighbouring states, while also helping to reduce medical referrals and healthcare-related travel outside the region.
