Nollywood producers prioritise beauty over talent – Sunshine Rosman

Nollywood actress Shine Rosman has criticised what she described as Nollywood’s growing obsession with beauty at the expense of talent.

Speaking during a recent episode of the Baaj and Paul podcast, Rosman argued that the Nigerian movie industry now places excessive emphasis on physical appearance when casting actresses, a trend she believes is gradually undermining genuine acting talent.

According to her, the pressure to meet certain beauty standards has pushed some actresses toward cosmetic procedures and body enhancement surgeries, including Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL).

“Majority of Nollywood filmmakers prioritise beauty over talent. There are good directors who regard only talent but to be honest, majority prefer beauty to talent. That is why you see a lot of movie stars doing surgeries to enhance their bodies,” she claimed.

She added that opportunities are sometimes denied to women who do not conform to those standards through makeup or cosmetic enhancement.

Rosman also opined that some individuals who lack the necessary acting skills are securing movie roles mainly because of their physical appearance.

The actress urged filmmakers and industry stakeholders to refocus on talent and acting ability in order to preserve the quality and future of the Nigerian film industry.
