Peter Obi Becomes NDC’s Sole Presidential Aspirant

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has concluded the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for its 2027 presidential election, with former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, emerging as the party’s only aspirant.

The party, however, announced a one-week extension for the purchase of Expression of Interest Forms for other elective positions, including governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly seats.

Sources within the party disclosed on Monday that Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, was the only politician who obtained the presidential forms before the deadline expired.

The National Secretary of the party, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, confirmed that the earlier deadline of 6pm on May 17, 2026 had been extended to midnight on May 24, 2026 for other categories of aspirants.

According to the party, the extension applies only to aspirants contesting for seats in the State Houses of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate, and governorship elections, while the sale of presidential forms has officially closed.

The NDC timetable shows that screening of aspirants who purchased and completed their forms will run from May 19 to May 26, 2026.

The party also announced that the collection and submission of Nomination Forms for screened and cleared aspirants will begin on May 20 and end on May 26, 2026.

The NDC warned that no further extension would be granted after the new deadline and urged aspirants to strictly follow the party’s guidelines and timetable.

Aspirants were directed to appear before screening and pre-qualification panels with required documents, including educational certificates, birth certificates or age declarations, passport photographs, voter’s cards, NDC membership cards, and curriculum vitae, all submitted in six copies.

The party added that aspirants would be assessed based on competence, character, local political realities, and acceptance among voters.

It also instructed the screening committee to consider the party’s affirmative action policy for women, youths, and persons living with disabilities.

The NDC further encouraged aspirants to embrace consensus arrangements, stressing that only candidates cleared by the screening committee would qualify to obtain nomination forms.

With Obi now the only presidential aspirant, he is expected to emerge as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 presidential election after his recent defection from the African Democratic Congress.
