Akinteye Babatunde, a student of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OASUTECH), has emerged as the new national president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).…....
Akinteye secured victory after defeating four other contenders during the association’s 2026 national convention held in Abuja on Sunday.
The defeated aspirants included Aminu Maipampo of Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Awoyinpa Elijah of Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Olumide Josiah of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), and Opaleye Oladutun of Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta.
The newly elected president will take over from Olushola Oladoja, a postgraduate student of University of Jos (UNIJOS), who emerged president during the 2025 NANS convention held in Abuja.
According to the NANS constitution, every elected national president serves a one-year term, usually in line with the academic calendar of tertiary institutions across the country.
Speaking on the convention, Omotayo Samuel, chairman of the Independent Convention Planning Committee, disclosed that about 300 delegates participated in the election process.
The delegates reportedly included Student Union Government presidents, senate presidents, and other student leaders from various higher institutions nationwide.
In his acceptance speech after the election, Akinteye Babatunde expressed gratitude to the delegates for their confidence in him. He also pledged to sustain the achievements of the outgoing administration while promoting unity, welfare, and progress among Nigerian students.

Reactions as Akinteye Babatunde of OASUTECH emerges New NANS President, see below;
@GrandeurGTee said, “All these elders have refused to outgrow student politics. They have turned campus politics into an arena of thuggery and cultism and have become tools for the highest bidders in the larger political sphere. National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is long dead – an ideologically bereft organization that has become merely a monument to the great minds that once championed the cause of conscientious students and a better Nigeria.”
@serdeeq_Sq commented, “Congrats to Babtee on the victory But Bros, we dey see the student wey don get two wives and house for village 😂 NANS no be retirement home na. Make this one no turn another professional student leader wey go use our name chase politics. Focus on ASUU strikes, school fees wey dey choke students, and campus security.”
@AYODEJIAUSTIN9 wrote, “I saw this new yesterday and when I check the guy Facebook post he’s anti this current administration I hope he will continue to use his platform to advocate for good governance.”
@Muyiwa_Odofin remarked, “The guy isn’t a student but an alumnus of the school. He graduated about seven years ago..”
@TheInfamousEric uttered, “Would an age limit for post like these be a bad thing? I mean you can go to school at any age, even run for departmental positions but there needs to be an age limit regulation for a union like NANS with the sole aim of keeping out agbayas and ensuring fresh ideas come in.”
In conclusion, the emergence of Akinteye Babatunde as the new national president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) marks a new leadership phase for Nigeria’s student body following the 2026 national convention in Abuja.
With delegates drawn from across tertiary institutions nationwide, the election reflects the continued importance of student representation in national discourse. Akinteye’s victory over four other contenders signals strong backing from student leaders who participated in the electoral process.
As he steps into office, expectations remain high for the new NANS president to build on the achievements of his predecessor Olushola Oladoja and address pressing issues affecting students, including welfare, academic stability, and institutional reforms.
While reactions online remain mixed, with debates around the direction and credibility of student politics, many observers agree that his leadership will be closely watched as he works to promote unity and advocate for the interests of Nigerian students nationwide.
