Real reason why Thomas Tuchel refused to name Cole Palmer in England’s World Cup squad

Cole Palmer was reportedly been left out of England national football team’s 2026 World Cup squad after head coach Thomas Tuchel raised concerns over the Chelsea star’s personality and suitability for the squad dynamic.

Palmer was one of the biggest surprise omissions from England’s 26-man squad, which was officially announced at Wembley on Friday morning. The Chelsea F.C. midfielder joins a list of notable absentees that also includes Phil Foden, Harry Maguire, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luke Shaw, Adam Wharton and Morgan Gibbs-White.

Palmer has endured a difficult season at Stamford Bridge, struggling with a persistent groin injury that limited his involvement during the first half of the campaign. The midfielder registered 10 goals and three assists this season, a significant drop from the 27 goals and 15 assists he recorded during his breakthrough campaign with Chelsea two years ago.

While concerns over his form were believed to have influenced Tuchel’s decision, reports claim the England manager also placed significant importance on dressing-room personalities when selecting the squad for the tournament in the United States. According to reports, Tuchel felt Palmer’s “face does not fit” within the profile of players he wants around the squad during the World Cup.

The England manager is also said to hold similar reservations about Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden following his own inconsistent season. Among the surprise inclusions in the squad are Dan Burn and Jordan Henderson, both viewed as experienced figures capable of providing leadership within the dressing room.

England’s confirmed squad includes goalkeepers Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson and James Trafford. Defensive options include Ezri Konsa, John Stones, Marc Guehi, Jarell Quansah, Tino Livramento, Nico O’Reilly, Djed Spence, Reece James and Burn.

Midfielders selected are Declan Rice, Elliot Anderson, Henderson, Morgan Rogers, Jude Bellingham and Eberechi Eze. The attacking options include captain Harry Kane alongside Ivan Toney, Ollie Watkins, Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon.

England are scheduled to face Croatia national football team on June 17, Ghana national football team on June 23 and Panama national football team on June 27 during the group stage of the tournament. Maguire later reacted publicly to his omission, expressing shock at the decision despite what he described as a strong season at Manchester United F.C..

“I was confident I could of played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had. I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision,” Maguire said. “I’ve loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years. I wish the players, all the best this summer.”
