Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has strongly criticized reports that the residence of Nafiu Bala, a factional leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), was allegedly set on fire by aggrieved youths.….....
The incident, which was initially reported by Punch Newspapers, is said to have taken place shortly after a Supreme Court ruling that affirmed the leadership of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola within the party.
The judgment reportedly intensified existing divisions within the ADC, fueling tensions among members and supporters.
In a reaction posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Sowore described the alleged attack as unacceptable and a dangerous sign of escalating political intolerance.
He emphasized that violence should have no place in a democratic system, regardless of the circumstances.
Sowore called on security agencies to act without delay, urging them to thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice. He warned that failure to respond decisively could encourage further acts of violence and undermine democratic stability.
He also stressed the importance of accountability across all political groups, noting that no party or its supporters should be shielded from scrutiny. According to him, individuals who resort to violence within the ADC are no different from those they often criticize in rival political parties.
The reported attack has heightened concerns among political observers, particularly as it comes at a time of internal disputes within the ADC. Analysts say such incidents, if confirmed, highlight the growing need for political actors and their supporters to exercise restraint and prioritize peaceful engagement.
