Tragedy As Nigerian Footballer Dies In Abuja After Suspected Food Poisoning

The Nigerian football community has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of 21-year-old striker, Victor Akaniyene Udoh, who reportedly died after falling critically ill during a holiday visit to Abuja.

Udoh was said to have taken ill under circumstances suspected to be linked to food poisoning, though authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause of death.

PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the young forward, who recently featured for Belgian side Royal Antwerp, became seriously ill after an outing with friends. He was reportedly found unresponsive the following morning and rushed to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Sources familiar with the incident said efforts to revive him proved unsuccessful.

Born on October 18, 2004, in Akwa Ibom State, Udoh had begun to carve a niche for himself in European football. He moved to Belgium in 2023 and impressed within Royal Antwerp’s youth ranks before earning promotion to the senior team.

In his short but promising career, he also had stints with English club Southampton FC and Czech side SK Dynamo České Budějovice.

His sudden death has sparked grief across the football fraternity, with tributes pouring in for a player widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s emerging talents.

As of the time of filing this report, officials are yet to release an autopsy report to ascertain the precise cause of his death.
