Commuters at a busy subway station in the United States are facing criticism after disturbing surveillance footage showed a man trapped in an escalator while dozens walked past without helping.…....
The victim, identified as 40-year-old Steven McCluskey, died following the tragic incident at Davis Station in Somerville, Massachusetts. Reports indicate that the father of two was heading toward the train platform shortly after 5 a.m. when he lost his footing near the bottom of the escalator.
Moments later, part of his clothing became caught in the machinery, pinning him underneath the moving steps. Security footage circulating online shows McCluskey struggling for several minutes as commuters continued entering and leaving the station.
Some appeared confused by the situation, while others briefly stopped before moving away. Several people reportedly avoided the escalator altogether and used nearby stairs instead.
Authorities say it took more than 20 minutes before a transit employee finally activated the emergency stop button. By the time emergency crews arrived, McCluskey had already gone into cardiac arrest.
Rescue teams spent close to half an hour freeing him from the machine before rushing him to hospital. He later died from his injuries ten days after the accident.
The heartbreaking footage has sparked outrage online, with many questioning how such a serious emergency could unfold in a crowded station without immediate intervention.
McCluskey’s family has also demanded answers from transport authorities, accusing station staff of failing to respond quickly enough.
Officials from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority described the incident as deeply tragic and promised a full investigation into what happened.
The viral video continues to trigger debate about public safety, emergency response, and the growing tendency of bystanders to ignore people in distress.
