Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has spoken about the strained relationship between former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and his 2023 running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, offering his perspective on the circumstances that may have led to tensions between the two political figures.…....
Umeh made the remarks during an interview aired on SymfoniTV, where he discussed recent political developments involving the Labour Party and the future direction of Peter Obi’s political career. According to the senator, Obi’s political decisions have consistently been guided by long-term strategic thinking and a commitment to what he considers the broader national interest.
The lawmaker suggested that Obi’s political calculations and desire to pursue his vision for governance may have contributed to disagreements with Datti Baba-Ahmed, especially following Obi’s reported departure from the Labour Party.
Datti Baba-Ahmed had earlier expressed disappointment over Obi’s decision to leave the party, maintaining that the Labour Party provided the political platform that elevated Obi to national prominence during the 2023 presidential election. His comments sparked reactions across political circles, with supporters and critics debating the implications of Obi’s political moves and the future of opposition politics in Nigeria.
However, Senator Umeh defended Obi’s actions, arguing that political leaders with strategic foresight often make difficult decisions when they believe a particular environment no longer aligns with their objectives or ideals.
According to him, Obi’s ambition has always centered on service delivery and improving governance in Nigeria, rather than remaining tied to political structures that may hinder his broader goals.
Umeh stated that Obi’s political philosophy is rooted in strategic planning and purposeful leadership, insisting that the former Anambra State governor understands when to make transitions in pursuit of what he believes will better serve the Nigerian people.
Speaking during the interview, the senator said, “Peter Obi’s strategic vision is the answer to all these things they’re saying. Somebody who has a strategic mind will know when to move from a place of discomfort to go in pursuit of an ideal. Peter’s ambition is to provide service to the people of the country..”
