US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Chinese President Xi Jinping does not want Iran to have a nuclear weapon, adding that the two leaders were aligned on ending the war in West Asia.
“We did discuss Iran. We feel very similar (on) Iran. We want that to end. We don’t want them to have a nuclear weapon. We want the straits open,” Trump said, according to Reuters.
The two are meeting at Zhongnanhai, a compound housing both the offices and residences of the Chinese Communist Party’s elites, on Friday, May 15.
“We want them to get it ended because it’s a crazy thing there, a little bit crazy. And it’s no good, it can’t happen,” he added.
Chinese foreign ministry earlier in the day issued a statement, condemning the war, saying it “should never have happened” and has “no reason to continue”.
“Finding a solution as soon as possible is beneficial to both the US and Iran, as well as to countries in the region and the world as a whole,” the ministry said in a statement.
