Turaki-led PDP faction names Jonathan as presidential candidate

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction led by Kabiru Turaki has announced former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

Jonathan’s candidacy was ratified on Saturday at a special national convention held at the party’s office in Area 10, Garki, Abuja.

Although the former president was not present at the venue, his certificate of return was received on his behalf by Fred Agbedi, a member of the House of Representatives representing Bayelsa State.

The Turaki-led faction had “initially planned” to hold its convention at the A-Class Park and Event Centre. However, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) directed owners of hotels and event centres to only engage with political party leadership recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The faction of the PDP backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike is currently recognised by the electoral body.

On Saturday morning, police officers “blocked” access roads leading to the A-Class Park and Event Centre, forcing organisers to relocate the convention.

Party officials later confirmed that the event was moved to another location within Area 10.

It is understood that a date for the formal presentation of the party’s flag to Jonathan will be announced in due course.
