Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, was on Thursday seen going through the streets of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, in an unconventional manner.
The literary icon was spotted riding on a commercial motorcycle, popularly known as Okada, as he made his exit from the Ake area of the city.
Observers and witnesses at the scene noted that the 89-year-old playwright resorted to the two-wheeled transport after facing significant difficulty in securing fuel for his private vehicle.
Many residents who witnessed the scene expressed shock, noting that if a figure of Soyinka’s stature is feeling the pinch of the fuel price hike to the point of using an Okada, the plight of the average Nigerian has reached a critical stage.
Professor Soyinka, who was born in the Ake area of Abeokuta, has often been vocal about national issues and the welfare of the masses.
His decision to use a commercial motorcycle rather than wait for hours at a filling station or pay exorbitant black market prices resonated with many as a silent protest against the prevailing economic conditions.
The price of fuel, which has hit as high as N1,500 in some parts of the country, has led to a sharp increase in transportation costs and a general rise in the cost of living.
