“Wedding wey I no sure say go last” — Lady backs out of friend’s ₦300k asoebi plan

A lady has sparked conversation online after narrating how she withdrew from a friend’s bridal train over the high cost attached to participating in the wedding ceremony.

According to her, the bride-to-be contacted her ahead of the first week of June wedding to invite her as one of the asoebi girls.

Excited by the invitation, she asked for the price of the asoebi, only to be told it would cost ₦200,000 with gele and ₦150,000 without it.

The lady explained that after calculating the likely cost of sewing, shoes, makeup and other expenses, she realised the total budget could climb above ₦250,000.

Rising wedding expenses

She further disclosed that matters became worse after members of the bridal group were asked to contribute ₦50,000 each towards a gift for the bride.

Trying to raise the money is really a bad investment on my side, especially now that I’m at my lowest,” she said while explaining why she eventually informed the bride that she could no longer participate as an asoebi girl.

“I requested that I be removed from the group but promised to still attend the wedding,” she added.

Bride’s response sparks reactions

However, the lady claimed the bride reacted by mocking her financial situation and referencing her supposed earnings from Elon Musk-owned ventures.

The next thing I heard was, ‘even with all the money Elon Musk is paying you guys, you can’t bring out a little to spend on your friend,’” she recounted.

Her story has since triggered mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians lamenting the increasing financial pressure tied to modern weddings.

Similar complaints about expensive asoebi demands and bridal train contributions have repeatedly surfaced on social media in recent years.
