The Lagos State Government has announced plans to demolish all distressed buildings in the Alakija area of the state.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said this during an inspection of the two-storey building that collapsed on Thursday.
He said the collapsed building was marked for demolition, and those occupying the building were asked to vacate it, but they refused. Omotoso also said all distressed structures and buildings under high tension will be pulled down to prevent further disaster in the area.
The commissioner, who led a government delegation to the area, commiserated with the families of those who lost their loved ones and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has concluded search, rescue, and recovery operations at the collapsed two-storey building at Alakija Bus Stop, Satellite Town, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of the state.
Twenty-seven persons were rescued through coordinated efforts by the LASEMA Response Team, sister agencies, and members of the community. Nine bodies were recovered, including four adults confirmed dead before responders’ arrival.

Meanwhile, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has also directed the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) to commence an immediate structural integrity assessment of adjoining buildings and enforce compliance with building codes in the area.
