Wrexham hails Okonkwo after Super Eagles debut clean sheet

Wrexham AFC have celebrated goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo after he kept a clean sheet on his Nigeria debut in the Super Eagles’ 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi-final in London.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper started Tuesday’s game at The Valley and delivered a composed display as Nigeria secured a place in the final.

The victory moved the Super Eagles closer to reclaiming the Unity Cup after missing out in the previous edition.

After the match, Wrexham praised the goalkeeper on social media.

The club posted on X: “A clean sheet for Arthur Okonkwo on Super Eagles debut.”

Okonkwo previously represented England at youth level but qualified to play for Nigeria through his parents. FIFA confirmed his eligibility for the Super Eagles in April.

Named among the debutants by coach Eric Chelle, the goalkeeper will now hope to keep his place for the final and also feature in the June friendlies against Portugal and Poland.

His Nigeria debut adds to a remarkable rise in recent seasons with Wrexham.

Okonkwo first joined the Welsh club on loan from Arsenal in 2023 before completing a permanent move in the summer of 2024 after leaving the Premier League side. He signed a three-year contract with Wrexham.

The goalkeeper has since enjoyed back-to-back promotions with the club. He was also named in the League Two Team of the Season for the 2023/24 campaign.

Okonkwo made 39 appearances for Wrexham this season and kept 10 clean sheets as Phil Parkinson’s side mounted a strong push in the Championship.
