No fewer than 19 persons have been reportedly killed and several others injured following a fresh attack on Kawel village in Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack was said to have occurred late Sunday night when gunmen invaded the community while residents were asleep.
Residents said the assailants stormed the village and opened fire on the people, leaving many dead and others with varying degrees of injuries.
The latest attack has again heightened tension in Bokkos and other parts of Plateau State, which have witnessed repeated attacks on rural communities in recent months.
Although the exact number of injured persons had yet to be officially confirmed, community sources said several victims were taken to nearby health facilities for treatment.
The incident adds to the growing concern over persistent insecurity in Plateau communities, where residents have repeatedly called for stronger security presence and decisive action against armed attackers.
Security agencies were yet to issue a detailed official statement on the attack as of the time of filing this report.
The latest killing comes amid renewed calls on the Federal and Plateau State Governments to protect vulnerable communities and bring perpetrators of recurring attacks in the state to justice.
