The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 33-year-old man, Ifechukwu Okechukwu, over allegations that he murdered his 23-year-old girlfriend and secretly buried her in Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Police authorities confirmed that the arrest followed credible intelligence provided by members of the public, which led operatives to the suspect and triggered a full-scale investigation into the incident.
Spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for detailed inquiry.
According to him, detectives are currently working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the alleged crime and to ensure that justice is served.
He stated:
“Police operatives attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department have taken over the case and commenced detailed inquiries to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that justice is served.”
Ikenga further noted that the Command commended residents of the state for their vigilance and timely sharing of information, which he said continues to assist security agencies in tackling criminal activities.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reassured residents that the Command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
He urged members of the public to continue supporting security agencies by reporting suspicious activities promptly.
Orutugu emphasized that community cooperation remains critical in preventing and solving crimes, adding that perpetrators will be brought to justice after thorough investigations.
The alleged incident has sparked concern among residents of Nkpor and surrounding communities in Idemili North. Police say further details will be made public as investigations progress, while forensic and intelligence teams continue efforts to uncover the full circumstances behind the victim’s death and burial.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased woman, pending official confirmation and notification of her family.
