The Abia State Government has commenced the enforcement of its newly introduced centralised transport system in Umuahia, marking a significant step in its efforts to modernise urban transportation and improve traffic management in the state capital.
As part of the initiative, transport operators have begun a phased relocation to the newly established Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal in Umuahia. The move is aimed at streamlining transport operations, reducing congestion, and creating a more organised and secure environment for commuters and transport workers.
State officials said the new transport system is designed to bring order to public transportation by consolidating commercial vehicle activities into designated terminals. The government believes the policy will improve passenger safety, ease traffic flow, and enhance the overall aesthetics of the city.
The Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal, named after the wife of Abia State Governor, was constructed to serve as a central hub for intercity and intracity transport services. The facility is equipped with modern amenities intended to provide a more convenient experience for both passengers and transport operators.
Authorities explained that the relocation would be implemented in phases to allow transport unions and operators sufficient time to adjust to the new arrangement. Officials also noted that the government has been engaging stakeholders, including transport unions and commercial drivers, to ensure a smooth transition.
The enforcement exercise is expected to address longstanding challenges associated with indiscriminate parking, roadside loading, and traffic bottlenecks in key areas of Umuahia. Government representatives said the policy aligns with broader urban renewal efforts being undertaken by the current administration.
Some transport operators have expressed support for the initiative, citing the need for a more organised transport system, while others have called for continued dialogue to address operational concerns and ensure that the transition does not negatively affect their businesses.
Residents and commuters have also welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the centralised transport system will improve movement within the city and contribute to a cleaner and more orderly urban environment.
The Abia State Government has reiterated its commitment to implementing reforms that will transform transportation infrastructure and position Umuahia as a modern and efficiently managed capital city.
