Some aspirants for the Enugu-North Senatorial District by-election have rejected the outcome of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries held on May 26 and 29.
The rejection is contained in a statement jointly signed by Dr Vincent Obetta and Okay Agbo on behalf of other aspirants on Thursday in Enugu.
It would be recalled that the senatorial seat for Enugu-North District became vacant following the death of Sen. Okey Ezea in November 2025.
Meanwhile the aspirants said that no valid primary election was conducted in the district in preparation for the bye-election scheduled for June 20.
“On behalf of all the aggrieved aspirants in NDC from Enugu-North Senatorial District, we reject the result of the purported primary election.
“No valid direct primary election was conducted in any electoral ward, and no lawful consensus process took place as required by law,” the statement read in parts.
The aspirants stated that the exercise which produced Oscar Ossai as NDC’s candidate did not reflect the party’s democratic ideals. “It was a mere imposition of candidate through a process that excluded aspirants, stakeholders, and party members,” the aspirants said.
They further said that the list of candidates was prepared and submitted through the influence of some party leaders in the state. “Duly screened aspirants who invested time, resources, and commitment in the party and the primaries were totally ignored in the process,” they said.
The aspirants urged NDC national leadership not to accept the outcome of the exercise, describing it as lacking credibility and fairness. “The NDC is also founded on the principles of justice, fairness, participation and democracy,” they said.
