Akpabio Moves To Rescue Senators Who Lost Primaries Ahead Of 2027

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has disclosed that the leadership of the National Assembly is making efforts to secure return tickets for some senators who lost their parties’ primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Akpabio made this known on Tuesday while addressing lawmakers after the Senate resumed plenary following a four-week recess.

Findings indicate that no fewer than 40 incumbent senators across major political parties, including the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party, failed to secure tickets during the primaries, raising concerns within the red chamber.

Among those affected are Senators Ned Nwoko, Gbenga Daniel, Danjuma Goje, and Rufai Hanga.

Akpabio described the outcome of the primaries as unexpected, noting that the Senate leadership was taken aback by the scale of losses suffered by sitting lawmakers.

“I felicitate, particularly those who have secured their mandates to represent their parties in the next election.

“I know that there will always be victories and disappointments, yet above every individual triumph stands a greater triumph — the triumph of democracy itself,” he said.

He, however, assured that efforts were ongoing across party lines to reduce the number of affected lawmakers.

“In this Senate, we have promised that we will have very few disappointments, and I do know that the Senate leader and the leadership of the Senate are working very hard towards that,” Akpabio added.

The Senate President also used the occasion to express concern over the recent abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, describing the incident as a grave assault on humanity.

While condemning the attack, he cautioned politicians and political aspirants against exploiting national tragedies for personal or partisan gains.

“At moments such as these, there is a temptation to divide, to accuse, and to seek advantage from tragedy. Politicians and aspirants must resist that temptation for such cheap publicity,” he said.

Akpabio called for collective support for security agencies, stressing the need to strengthen efforts to protect schools and communities across the country.

“Let us continue to support every lawful and necessary measure to strengthen security, safeguard our communities, and ensure that every bandit faces the full weight of justice,” he stated.

The development comes amid growing security concerns and heightened political activities ahead of the 2027 elections.
