Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has alleged that President Bola Tinubu is confronting deliberate attempts by “enemies of progress” who, according to him, are sponsoring insecurity across the country to undermine the administration.
Akpabio made the claim on Friday while delivering a keynote address on democratic governance and peacebuilding in Africa at the unveiling of three books held in honour of former military Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, who marked his 84th birthday anniversary.
The Senate President, who spoke on the broader challenges of governance in Africa, said Nigeria’s security crisis was being aggravated by actors allegedly bent on portraying the Tinubu administration in a negative light.
According to him, President Bola Tinubu has been “grappling with many enemies of progress,” insisting that such forces were working to destabilise the country and erode public confidence in government efforts.
Akpabio, however, did not provide specific evidence to support the allegation.
He also used the occasion to commend former military ruler Abdulsalami Abubakar for what he described as his critical role in Nigeria’s democratic transition, noting that despite pressure from some quarters, the ex-head of state resisted calls to extend his stay in office.
He contrasted Abdulsalami’s decision with what he described as tendencies by “sycophants” who often encourage leaders to remain in power beyond their mandate.
The Senate President further expressed optimism that Nigeria would overcome its current security and economic challenges, assuring that terrorism and poverty would ultimately be defeated through sustained national efforts.
The event, which brought together political leaders, diplomats, and scholars, was also part of activities marking Abdulsalami Abubakar’s 84th birthday celebrations.
