In a decisive move to strengthen Nigeria’s fight against substance abuse and illicit trafficking, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs and NarcoticDrugs, Senator Joseph Ikpea, has pledged robust legislative support for the National Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The commitment was made during his maiden familiarisation visit to the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja, where he was warmly received by the agency’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Buba Marwa, alongside top management.
Senator Ikpea commended the daily sacrifices and patriotism of NDLEA operatives nationwide, particularly lauding the recent public destruction of massive quantities of seized illicit drugs in Benin City.
He described the exercise as a bold demonstration of the agency’s resolve under Marwa’s transformative leadership.
“The public destruction of these confiscated drugs sends a strong message to criminal syndicates that Nigeria remains resolute in its determination to combat illicit drug activities,” Ikpea stated.
“Such actions not only prevent the substances from returning to society but also reinforce public confidence in the agency’s transparency, professionalism, and effectiveness.”
Acknowledging the severe threat drug abuse poses to national security, economic productivity, and the youth, the lawmaker assured Marwa of the Senate’s unwavering backing.
“The Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics, under my watch, will continue to provide the necessary legislative backing to strengthen the agency’s capacity, improve operational effectiveness, and enhance its ability to discharge its mandate,” Ikpea pledged.
He further emphasised, “The war against drugs cannot be won by the NDLEA alone; it is a collective national responsibility.”
In his response, General Marwa appreciated the historic visit, describing it as a clear testament to the Senate’s commitment to a drug-free Nigeria.
He highlighted ongoing operational successes and challenges, emphasising that legislative support is critical in strengthening the legal and institutional frameworks necessary to confront increasingly sophisticated drug trafficking syndicates.
