Apprehension as gunmen attack Plateau mining site, kill five

Five youths were reportedly shot dead on Tuesday afternoon after gunmen stormed a local mining site in Gero Village, Gyel District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The incident was said to have occurred at about 3pm, hours after another reported attack around the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru.

Gero Village is located about five kilometres from the NIPSS community.

According to a resident, the victims were actively working at the mining site when the attackers invaded the area and opened fire without warning, killing five youths instantly.

The killings were also confirmed in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong.

The association alleged that the attack formed part of growing security threats in communities around the area and expressed concern over the safety of residents and strategic national institutions.

The statement further referenced an earlier reported attack around NIPSS, Kuru, which it claimed resulted in the death of three security personnel.

The group called for urgent intervention by security agencies to prevent further attacks and restore confidence among affected communities.

It also urged government authorities to strengthen security surveillance and ensure the protection of lives and property.

As of the time of filing this report, efforts to reach the spokesman of the Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful.
