Maradun, Zamfara State – At least 16 farmers have been killed and 13 others injured after armed bandits invaded farmlands in Goron Namaye District of Maradun Local Government Area, Zamfara State.
The deadly attack occurred on Friday while residents were working on their farms during the ongoing planting season.
According to local authorities, the attackers stormed the farming community in large numbers and opened fire on farmers, causing panic as many residents fled for safety. Several victims were reportedly shot at close range, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Chairman of Maradun Local Government Area, Alhaji Sanusi Ahmed Dosara, confirmed the incident and described it as a tragic assault on innocent citizens who were carrying out their daily agricultural activities.
“The bandits attacked farmers who had gone to their farms. Sixteen people lost their lives, while thirteen others suffered injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment,” he said.
Residents of the area revealed that the attack may have been connected to previous threats issued by armed groups warning villagers not to cultivate their farmlands. Despite the warnings, many farmers returned to their fields due to the need to support their families and prepare for the farming season.
A local resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attackers arrived unexpectedly and began shooting indiscriminately.
“We heard gunshots from different directions. People ran for their lives, but many could not escape. The scene was heartbreaking,” the resident said.
Security sources disclosed that troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, alongside local vigilantes, responded to distress calls from the community shortly after the attack. However, the gunmen reportedly fled into nearby forests before security personnel arrived.
Military forces have since intensified operations across the area in an effort to track down the attackers and prevent further assaults on farming communities.
Reports also suggest that some residents may have been abducted during the attack, although authorities have yet to officially confirm the number of persons missing.
