At least 17 people, including seven visitors who travelled to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir, have been reportedly killed after armed bandits attacked Dangulbi community in Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The deadly attack, which occurred during the Sallah celebration period, has thrown residents into mourning and renewed concerns over the worsening insecurity affecting parts of northern Nigeria.
According to local sources, the gunmen stormed the community on motorcycles in the early hours of Sunday and began shooting indiscriminately. Residents said the attackers moved through different parts of the village, causing panic as many villagers fled into nearby bushes for safety.
Eyewitnesses revealed that several of the victims were visitors who had travelled from neighbouring communities and states to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir with their families. The attackers reportedly targeted homes and shops during the raid, killing residents and looting valuables.
Community members said the bandits also carted away food items, cash, and other goods from several shops before fleeing the area. Some residents further claimed that a number of people were abducted during the attack, although a few reportedly escaped later amid confusion caused by heavy rainfall.
Security operatives were later deployed to the affected community following distress calls from residents. The spokesperson of the Sokoto State Police Command reportedly confirmed the incident and assured that efforts were ongoing to restore calm and track down those responsible for the attack.
