In a significant move towards fostering a more inclusive society, Coat of Many Colours Africa brought its advocacy programme to Imota Local Council Development Area, reinforcing support for children with learning challenges and special needs.
As a privately funded organisation, Coat of Many Colours Africa has continued to serve as a vital link between parents, schools, and essential support services for neurodivergent children. Through sustained grassroots engagement with communities and local leadership, the foundation has expanded its impact across various communities, with the Imota outreach marking another important milestone in its mission.
The programme, tagged “Disability Unchained,” was held on Tuesday, 9 June, 2026, at Admos Hotel and Suites, Imota. The event attracted a diverse audience comprising government officials, healthcare professionals, educators, parents, caregivers, students, and community stakeholders, all united by a common goal of promoting inclusion and equal opportunities for children with special needs.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were the Chairman of Imota LCDA, Hon. Benson Sunday Ayodele; the Chairperson of Imota LCDA, Mrs. Oluwatosin Benson; the Wife of the Ranodu of Imota, Olori Abiodun Bakare Agoro; Hon. Abosede Idowu Yekini, Supervisor for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation; Hon. Felicia Igwe, Special Adviser on Tourism and Culture; Hon. Morayo Solarin Akinyemi, Special Adviser on Education and Library Services; Mrs. Hussaini Aderonke, Head of Department, Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation; and Mr. Kayode Olusesan, Director, Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development. Also present were teachers, field officers, students, and their families.
The programme was expertly moderated by Mrs. Antonia Alabi and Mr. Steve Alabi, who guided discussions centred on disability awareness, inclusion, and community support.
In his keynote remarks, Hon. Benson Sunday Ayodele reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth development and social inclusion, stressing that the progress of any society is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable citizens. He noted that children with special needs, alongside orphans and the elderly, deserve special attention and support, adding that his administration would continue to partner with organisations and stakeholders working to improve their welfare and access to opportunities.
Speaking on behalf of the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Mr. Kayode Olusesan underscored the importance of grassroots collaboration in addressing the challenges faced by children with disabilities. He emphasized that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive without discrimination, shame, or stigma.
The event also featured insightful presentations from clinical experts. Dr. Oluwaniyi Paul, a Clinical Psychologist, encouraged parents and caregivers to provide unconditional love, patience, and acceptance to children with special needs. Dr. Adefolaseye Adebayo, Head of the Ear, Nose and Throat Department at General Hospital Isolo, enlightened participants on hearing impairments, highlighting the dangers of excessive noise exposure and practical preventive measures.
One of the most emotional moments of the programme was a video presentation showcasing the daily experiences, achievements, and progress of students supported by Coat of Many Colours Africa. The audience was equally inspired during the students’ skills exhibition, officially opened by the Queen, where participants displayed impressive crafts and artworks that demonstrated their creativity and potential.
The programme concluded with an awards ceremony recognising outstanding educators, caregivers, and community advocates whose dedication has significantly impacted the lives of children with special needs.
The Disability Unchained outreach in Imota served as a powerful example of what can be achieved when compassionate governance collaborates with dedicated advocacy organisations. Through the leadership of Hon. Benson Sunday Ayodele and the support of the First Lady, Mrs. Oluwatosin Benson, Imota LCDA continues to demonstrate its commitment to building an inclusive community where every child is valued, empowered, and given the opportunity to succeed.
