Real Madrid have completed the signing of Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva on a free transfer from Manchester City FC, adding one of Europe’s most accomplished players to their squad as the club continues its rebuilding project under manager José Mourinho.
The Spanish giants confirmed the deal on Tuesday, securing Silva’s services on a two-year contract that will keep him at the Santiago Bernabeu until June 30, 2028.
In a statement announcing the transfer, the club said: “Real Madrid C. F. and Bernardo Silva have reached an agreement for him to become a Real Madrid player for the next two seasons, until June 30, 2028.”
Silva’s arrival is regarded as one of the most significant moves of the summer and represents a major statement of intent from Real Madrid following two consecutive seasons without a major trophy.
Reports indicate that Mourinho’s appointment earlier this month played a key role in convincing the Portugal international to move to the Spanish capital.
The midfielder had attracted interest from several clubs across Europe, including rivals Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, but Madrid ultimately won the race for his signature.
The move brings an end to an illustrious nine-year spell at Manchester City.
Since joining from Monaco in 2017, Silva established himself as one of the most influential players of the Pep Guardiola era, making 460 appearances and becoming a central figure in the club’s success.
The Portuguese star leaves the Etihad Stadium as the most decorated player in Manchester City’s history, having collected 19 major trophies during his time in England.
Last season, Silva played an important leadership role after the departure of Kyle Walker and featured in all 38 Premier League matches as City finished second in the table.
He also helped the club win the Carabao Cup and FA Cup before deciding to embark on a new challenge in Spain.
His arrival is the latest development in an ambitious summer overhaul being overseen by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and Mourinho.
The club have already strengthened their squad with the signing of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea and continue to be linked with further additions as they seek to reclaim domestic and European honours.
Silva’s versatility, experience and technical quality are expected to provide Mourinho with a valuable asset as he begins his second spell in charge of the club.
Despite the transfer being finalised, Silva’s immediate focus remains on international duty.
The midfielder is currently representing Portugal national football team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and remains an important figure in Roberto Martinez’s squad.
Real Madrid supporters will now be eagerly awaiting his arrival for pre-season preparations, hopeful that one of the most successful midfielders of his generation can help lead the club back to the summit of European football.
