Maiduguri, Borno State – June 15, 2026 – The Borno State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a public holiday in commemoration of the first day of the Islamic Calendar Year 1448 After Hijrah (AH).
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, on behalf of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum.
According to the government, the holiday is intended to provide an opportunity for residents, particularly the Muslim faithful, to reflect on the spiritual significance of the Islamic New Year and renew their commitment to peace, unity, tolerance, and service to humanity.
Governor Zulum urged citizens to use the occasion to pray for lasting peace in Borno State and Nigeria as a whole. He also called on residents to embrace the values of justice, compassion, mutual respect, and harmonious coexistence among people of diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds.
“The Islamic New Year serves as a reminder of the importance of faith, sacrifice, perseverance, and community development. We encourage all residents to use this period for reflection and prayers for the continued progress of our state and nation,” the statement said.
The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting peace, security, and socio-economic development across Borno State while fostering unity among all citizens.
The Islamic New Year, which begins with the month of Muharram, commemorates the historic migration (Hijrah) of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah, an event that marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar.
Government offices, public institutions, and other establishments across the state are expected to observe the public holiday.
