BREAKING: Chelsea Receive £17 Million Compensation as Enzo Maresca Joins Manchester City

Chelsea have confirmed they received a £17 million compensation fee following Enzo Maresca’s departure to take over as Manchester City manager.

In a statement, Maresca admitted his mid-season exit caused disruption at Stamford Bridge.

«”I recognise that my departure from Chelsea in the middle of the season caused disruption for the club, and I apologise for that. It was neither my intention nor my wish,” he said.»

However, Chelsea issued a strongly worded statement explaining the circumstances surrounding his exit.

According to the club, Maresca informed Chelsea in the autumn of last year that he could have the opportunity to succeed Pep Guardiola at Manchester City at the end of the season.

Chelsea claimed it soon became clear that Maresca was determined to take the City job despite still being under contract, adding that he had no contractual right to terminate his deal.

The club also revealed that Maresca unexpectedly resigned in December 2025, saying they felt “let down” because they believed “his head and heart were focused on another club” shortly after arriving at Chelsea.

Chelsea insisted they had no choice but to accept his resignation in order to protect the players, supporters, and the club’s identity.

The Blues also expressed full confidence in their new manager, Xabi Alonso, describing him as “a professional of the highest integrity” with the qualities needed to deliver the success Chelsea fans expect.
