BREAKING: Customs CG Adeniyi Gets 6-Month Mandate For Promote, Retire Officers

President Bola Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi.

The extension will take effect from August 1, 2026, when Adeniyi’s current tenure is due to expire, and will run until February 2027.

According to a statement issued by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Communication, Bayo Onanuga, on Friday , the extension is aimed at enabling the Customs boss to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window initiative and ensure a seamless leadership transition within the service.

The Presidency said the additional six months would allow Adeniyi to complete key reforms and oversee critical personnel matters in the Nigeria Customs Service.

During the transition period, Adeniyi is expected to work with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to facilitate the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and ensure the retirement of officers who have reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 years or completed 35 years in service.

The statement noted that the extension forms part of efforts to maintain stability within the service while ongoing reforms are being implemented.

Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s and has risen through the ranks over the years.

He became a Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023 before being appointed Comptroller-General by President Tinubu in June 2023.

The Presidency expressed confidence that the extension would support the completion of ongoing reforms and facilitate an orderly succession process in the Nigeria Customs Service.
