The Enugu State Government has announced temporary restrictions on movement across the six local government areas that make up the Enugu North Senatorial District ahead of Saturday’s senatorial bye-election.
The government said the restriction, which will take effect from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on June 20, is aimed at ensuring a peaceful, orderly and credible conduct of the election being organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
This was contained in a public service announcement issued on Friday by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia.
In the notice, residents were informed that movement would be restricted across the district’s six local government areas and 102 electoral wards during the voting period.
Only INEC officials, security personnel, accredited election observers, media practitioners and other individuals authorised to perform election-related duties will be exempted from the restriction.
The state government urged eligible voters to come out and exercise their civic responsibilities peacefully and in line with electoral regulations.
It also called on political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct themselves in a lawful manner before, during and after the election. “The people and residents of the district are encouraged to exercise their civic responsibility peacefully and in accordance with electoral guidelines,” the statement read.
The government added that security agencies had been directed to ensure strict compliance with the movement restriction and maintain law and order throughout the exercise.
The bye-election is being conducted to fill the vacant Enugu North Senatorial seat, with voters expected to cast their ballots across the six local government areas of Igbo-Etiti, Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Eze South, Nsukka, Udenu and Uzo-Uwani.
The state government expressed appreciation to residents for their cooperation and wished voters a peaceful and successful electoral exercise. Meanwhile, the Enugu State Police Command on Thursday announced a total restriction of human and vehicular movement across the six local government areas making up the Enugu North Senatorial District ahead of Saturday’s bye-election.
The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, said movement would be restricted from 12am to 6pm on June 20, 2026, across Igbo-Etiti, Igbo Eze North, Igbo Eze South, Nsukka, Udenu, and Uzo-Uwani local government areas, where INEC will conduct the bye-election.
The restriction will not apply to electoral officials and those engaged in verified essential duties. The command said the measure was aimed at ensuring a peaceful, orderly, and credible electoral process in the district.
