Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah replaces injured Livramento in England World Cup squad

England have called up defender Trevoh Chalobah to their 2026 FIFA World Cup squad following the injury withdrawal of Tino Livramento ahead of the Three Lions’ opening match of the tournament.

Livramento sustained a calf injury during training on Sunday and has been ruled out of the competition after medical examinations confirmed he would be unable to play any further part in the World Cup.

The Football Association announced on Tuesday that Chalobah has been drafted in as a replacement, with FIFA regulations allowing teams to replace an outfield player up to 24 hours before their first match.

Livramento ruled out through injury

The Newcastle United defender had been preparing with the squad for England’s Group-stage opener against Croatia in Dallas, but the injury ended his tournament hopes before a ball had been kicked.

In a statement, the FA said: “Fifa regulations allow participating teams to replace an outfield player up to 24 hours before their opening fixture.

“Newcastle United defender Livramento picked up a calf injury in training on Sunday afternoon. A subsequent scan and medical assessment on Monday unfortunately confirmed he could play no further part in England’s tournament.”

The setback is a significant blow for the 23-year-old, who had been expected to provide defensive depth for manager Thomas Tuchel during the competition.

Chalobah set to join England camp

Chelsea defender Chalobah will not travel directly to Dallas with the rest of the squad. Instead, arrangements have been made for him to report to England’s training base in Kansas City, Missouri.

The FA added: “Arrangements are now being made for the Chelsea defender to make the journey to the team’s basecamp in Kansas City, while the rest of the squad will head to Dallas, Texas for the Three Lions’ opening group fixture against Croatia on Wednesday.”

Chalobah’s inclusion provides Tuchel with an additional defensive option as England begin their quest for World Cup glory.

The Three Lions open their campaign against Croatia on Wednesday before continuing their Group-stage fixtures later in the tournament.
