Arsenal have reportedly taken a major step in their pursuit of French midfielder Manu Kone after agreeing personal terms with the player’s representatives ahead of a potential summer move from AS Roma.
The 25-year-old midfielder, who is currently on international duty with France national football team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has emerged as one of Arsenal’s leading transfer targets as manager Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his midfield options.
According to reports from Italian media, Arsenal have moved quickly to position themselves at the front of the race after Kone’s previously anticipated move to Paris Saint-Germain failed to materialise.
The midfielder had reportedly favoured a switch to the French champions and is also said to have turned down interest from Atletico Madrid.
However, with Paris Saint-Germain yet to formalise their interest, Arsenal have seized the opportunity to advance discussions with the player’s camp.
The North London club’s growing confidence comes as Roma face mounting financial pressure ahead of the June 30 deadline to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.
The Serie A side had initially placed a €50 million valuation on the midfielder following his impressive performances under coach Gian Piero Gasperini.
However, the club’s need to balance its finances before the end of the month could force a compromise, with reports suggesting a deal worth around €45 million, approximately £43 million, may be enough to secure his signature.
Kone is viewed internally at Arsenal as a player capable of adding greater athleticism and forward momentum to the midfield.
Arteta is believed to see the French international as an ideal option to reduce the defensive workload currently carried by Declan Rice while also improving the team’s ability to transition quickly from defence into attack.
His ability to move the ball forward at pace is regarded as one of his standout qualities and a key reason behind Arsenal’s interest.
The midfielder is also seen as offering a different profile from long-term target Martin Zubimendi, whose more measured style has reportedly raised questions about his suitability for Arsenal’s fast-flowing tactical approach.
While no agreement has yet been reached between the two clubs, Arsenal’s reported success in securing personal terms represents a significant development as they continue efforts to bring one of France’s World Cup stars to the Emirates Stadium ahead of the new season.
