Court Grants Sowore ₦200m Bail in Alledged Cybercrime Trial

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), ₦200 million bail in his ongoing prosecution for suspected cybercrime offenses.

Justice Mohammed Umar issued the verdict on Tuesday, admitting Sowore to bail but imposing harsh conditions on his release.

The court ordered Sowore to provide two sureties, one of whom must be a recognised traditional ruler from his community, and the other must own landed property in the Federal Capital Territory.

Justice Umar further directed the prosecution to verify both sureties before the bail terms are considered completed.

As part of the terms, the court ordered Sowore to give his international passport to the Deputy Chief Registrar of the Court pending the outcome of the case.

Following the ruling, the activist was released into the care of his legal team, allowing him to complete the bail terms.

The court then adjourned the hearings until July 6, when the defence is due to present its case.

Sowore is on trial on allegations of cybercrime, which he has repeatedly denied. His trial is scheduled to resume with the presentation of his defence at the next sitting.
