The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Yemi Oyeniyi, has called for stronger collaboration between the police and the legislature to enhance security and promote community policing in the state.
Oyeniyi made the call during a courtesy visit to the Delta State House of Assembly as part of ongoing stakeholder engagements aimed at improving public safety.
He said the visit was in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police to deepen collaboration with key stakeholders in advancing community policing initiatives, describing the state legislature as a critical partner in achieving this goal.
The police commissioner specifically sought legislative support to strengthen laws that would enable the speedy prosecution of drug traffickers and other criminal offenders.
He noted that crimes in riverine and rural communities, though often localised, pose significant threats to security and development, stressing that such areas—being central to the nation’s economy—require adequate protection.
Oyeniyi reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to professionalism, discipline, and accountability, assuring that the Delta State Command would continue to protect lives and property while upholding citizens’ fundamental rights.
In his response, the Speaker of the House, Emomotimi Guwor, welcomed the commissioner and expressed confidence in his leadership.
Guwor assured the police of the Assembly’s continued support, pledging legislative backing to address security challenges such as drug abuse, cultism, and other criminal activities.
He added that the House would sustain its collaboration with the police to ensure peace, security, and development in the state.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation towards building a safer Delta State.
The statement was issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, on Tuesday.
