KANO, NIGERIA — Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have intercepted a major shipment of illegal weapons in Kano State and arrested a suspected arms trafficker believed to be supplying firearms and military-grade equipment to bandit groups operating in parts of northern Nigeria.
The operation, which was carried out following credible intelligence gathering, led to the arrest of a suspect identified as Abubakar Muhammad in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State. Security sources disclosed that the suspect was allegedly involved in the transportation and distribution of weapons intended for criminal networks linked to armed banditry in the North-West region.
According to reports, DSS operatives recovered a significant cache of weapons during the operation, including three AK-47 assault rifles, four Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) tubes, and other ammunition-related accessories. Preliminary investigations indicate that the weapons were allegedly destined for a notorious bandit leader operating in Zamfara State.
Security officials described the interception as a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to dismantle arms trafficking networks that continue to fuel insecurity, kidnappings, and violent attacks across several northern states.
Sources familiar with the investigation revealed that the DSS had been monitoring the movement of the suspect for some time before carrying out the arrest. The operation reportedly prevented the weapons from reaching their intended recipients, potentially averting future attacks on vulnerable communities.
Authorities believe the suspect may be part of a wider criminal network involved in the procurement, transportation, and distribution of illegal firearms across state borders. Investigators are currently working to identify additional suspects, financiers, and collaborators connected to the trafficking ring.
The recovered weapons have been taken into custody for forensic examination, while the suspect remains under interrogation. Security agencies have indicated that further arrests may follow as investigations progress.
