Immediately, Mwangi saw the student land on Thika Road, he braked his car and stepped out to attend to the injured man.

“I was going to work via the Garden City service lane when I saw the incident, which was also captured on my dashcam. The bus ran over him. Instinctively, I stopped and got out of the car. There were other cars behind me that also stopped. We assessed the situation, and he urgently needed help. We put him in my car within a few minutes, and I drove off to look for help.

After driving for a while, I found the Nicco Sacco bus. It had stopped and was carrying passengers. I told the driver and conductor that the person they had mistreated was in my car. They said they wanted to go to the police station. I refused and told them Mutuku needed to go to the hospital first, but they declined,” he narrated.

Mutuku rushed to KNH via ambulance

Mwangi, full of compassion, decided to seek medical help first for Mutuku and drove until he reached a petrol station where he asked for directions to the nearest hospital in the area.

During that time, the Nicco Sacco bus driver parked behind his car, got out of the vehicle, and approached Mwangi, who was receiving directions to the hospital.

“They opened the door and assessed Mutuku’s condition. His leg looked badly injured. I told them to accompany me, but they were only interested in my number, which they took before leaving. I saw there was no choice but to carry the burden alone. I drove to Garden City, but found the hospital closed. I then dialled 911, where I received assistance and was directed to another hospital, which provided an ambulance and rushed us to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH),” he added.

Mwangi said he paid some fees at KNH before Mutuku could be attended to by medical officers, as required.

However, the system was slow, which delayed medical assistance to Mutuku, who, despite having stable vital signs, was in severe pain.

“There were a lot of issues at the hospital, but in the end, we handed Mutuku over to the nurses. I then went to Kasarani Police Station to report the incident. By the time I was leaving, the bus was already at the station. His brother had also arrived at the hospital, so I left them there. Around 12 p.m., I received a call that Mutuku had died,” he said.
