A woman has sparked conversations online after sharing how her family abandoned plans for a shawarma dinner and instead spent the money on cooking gas.
The woman explained that her cooking gas finished the previous night while she and her children were craving shawarma.
According to her, her husband suggested that she buy shawarma and drinks for the entire family as their dinner.
However, before making the purchase, she decided to calculate how much the meal would cost for a household of five.
Cost comparison changes family’s plan
After working out the expenses, the woman said the total cost of buying shawarma and drinks for everyone exceeded ₦35,000.
She then compared the amount with the cost of refilling a 12kg cylinder of cooking gas, which she said currently sells for about ₦24,000.
Explaining her decision, she wrote:
“Gas finished last night and the kids were craving shawarma, I was too. Hubby said to go out to get it for all of us with drinks for dinner, I punched my calculator to see how much it will cost for a family of 5. I arrived at over 35k. 12kg gas now cost 24k, we would use it 4weeks at least. I chose gas over shawarma.”
Rising living costs remain concern
The woman said the decision reflected the financial realities facing many households despite having two working adults in the home.
She noted that even families with stable incomes now have to carefully evaluate spending on items that were once considered occasional treats.
The post comes amid ongoing discussions about rising food prices, transportation costs and household expenses across Nigeria, with many families adjusting their spending priorities.
