Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued a 36-year-old woman, identified as Grace Aniekuoku, who was allegedly held in chains and confined in a room by her brother for more than one year and four months in Abuja.
The shocking incident came to light following a distress report received by the police, prompting officers from the Katampe Division to launch an immediate intervention.
According to the FCT Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Sanusi, law enforcement officers responded to intelligence indicating that the victim was being unlawfully detained under inhumane conditions at a residence within the Federal Capital Territory.
Upon arrival at the location, police officers reportedly encountered resistance from the suspect, identified as Chinedu Aniekuoku, who allegedly refused them access to the premises. Officers subsequently gained entry and discovered the victim chained inside a room.
Police said Grace was found in a severely malnourished and weakened condition after spending approximately 16 months in confinement. She was immediately rescued and transported to a medical facility, where she is currently receiving treatment and rehabilitation.
Investigators revealed that the victim had allegedly been forced to live in deplorable conditions, with limited access to basic necessities and healthcare throughout her period of confinement.
In a further development, preliminary investigations uncovered allegations that the suspect had taken custody of the victim’s son about two years ago and relocated him to an unknown destination. Authorities have launched efforts to locate the child and determine his current whereabouts.
The suspect was arrested at the scene and remains in police custody as investigations continue. The FCT Police Command stated that appropriate charges will be filed upon the conclusion of the investigation.
