The incident, which has sparked outrage over rising school violence and mob justice among youth, took place at a secondary school in central Uganda. The court heard that the lead perpetrator, whose name has been withheld due to her minor status but who has been convicted as a juvenile offender, assembled a group of peers to confront fellow female students accused of interacting with her boyfriend.
According to prosecution testimony presented before the magistrate’s court, the gang cornered the victims in a dormitory area. The lead student then ordered the gang to pin down the targeted students while she beat them with a stick. The attackers subsequently tore off the victims’ clothing, leaving them naked in full view of other students.
“The accused not only inflicted bodily pain but also deliberately stripped the complainants, causing extreme psychological humiliation and degradation,” the presiding magistrate stated while reading the judgment.
One victim reportedly sustained bruises and cuts on her back and arms. Another required medical attention for emotional shock. School administrators confirmed that the victims have since been withdrawn by their parents due to safety concerns.
During the trial, the perpetrator expressed remorse, claiming she had acted out of jealousy and felt “betrayed.” Her defense attorney argued for a non-custodial sentence, citing her young age and academic potential. However, the prosecution pushed for a deterrent penalty, arguing that stripping individuals in front of peers constitutes sexual humiliation and emotional torture.
The magistrate handed down a sentence of 12 months in a juvenile correctional facility, noting that the attack was premeditated, involved a gang, and left lasting trauma. “This court will not normalize mob violence in schools. A clear message must be sent that stripping, beating, and degrading fellow students has grave consequences,” the magistrate said.
