Kano Government Allocates ₦1.5 Billion to Support 1,500 Couples in Mass Wedding

KANO, Nigeria — The Kano State Government has approved the sum of ₦1.5 billion for the conduct of a mass wedding programme that will benefit 1,500 couples across the state, as part of efforts to support low-income residents and promote family stability.

The development was disclosed by the Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, during a briefing on the preparations for the exercise.

According to Daurawa, the programme attracted more than 5,000 applicants, out of which 3,000 individuals comprising 1,500 men and 1,500 women were shortlisted for mandatory medical screening. He explained that only candidates who successfully complete and pass the screening process will be eligible to participate in the mass wedding.

The medical examinations include tests for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, genotype compatibility, drug use, gonorrhoea, and other sexually transmitted infections. The screening is aimed at ensuring the health and well-being of the prospective couples before marriage.

Daurawa stated that the government-sponsored initiative will provide comprehensive support packages to the beneficiaries. These packages include household furniture, food items, and financial assistance to help the newlyweds establish stable homes.

Under the scheme, each bride is expected to receive ₦100,000 as business start-up capital, while each groom will receive ₦100,000 to support marriage-related expenses, including the payment of dowry and other traditional obligations.

The Kano State Government said the programme forms part of its broader social welfare strategy under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration. Authorities believe the initiative will ease the financial burden associated with marriage, encourage family formation, and address social challenges affecting vulnerable groups in the state.
