A Kenyan woman has opened up about her life as a full-time caregiver for her mother after she suffered a severe stroke.

Ann Njoroge shared her mother’s story, explaining how her illness has shaped Ann’s life and forced her to make significant personal sacrifices.
Speaking to NGBREAKINGNEWS, Ann said her goal was not only to seek support for her mother’s ongoing home-based care but also to shed light on the reality many caregivers face while looking after their loved ones.

When did Ann’s mum suffer stroke?
She revealed that she has been caring for her mother for over 12 years, especially after a second stroke left her condition much worse.

“My mother suffered her first stroke over 20 years ago. By God’s grace, she survived and continued to live a relatively normal life. She was able to walk, talk, and carry on with her daily activities despite the challenges that came with her condition. She remained strong and independent, and we were grateful for every extra year we had with her in that state.
However, everything changed in January this year when she suffered a second stroke. This one was far more severe. Since then, she has been left completely immobile, unable to speak, and fully dependent on care. She is currently on feeding tubes and requires round-the-clock attention under the care of a primary nurse,” she narrated.
For the past 12 years, Ann has stood by her mother’s side throughout her health journey, showing the same love and care her mother once gave her while she was growing up.

Ann shares emotional, financial toll
However, the recent turn of events has been the most difficult chapter for the family, with Ann admitting that the experience has taken a heavy emotional and financial toll.
“Watching her condition deteriorate so drastically has been heartbreaking, and the emotional weight of it is something I carry every day. Alongside this, the financial burden has become overwhelming. I have had to step away from work to care for her full-time, and meeting her daily medical needs, buying supplies, and maintaining her care have stretched us beyond our limits.
I believe my mother’s story represents many untold stories across Kenya, families and caregivers who quietly dedicate themselves to caring for their loved ones despite the immense sacrifices involved. These stories often go unheard, yet they deserve compassion, recognition, and support,” Ann added.
Ann also shared photos of her mother, showing how she looked before falling ill and how her condition has changed over the years.
