Kenyans living in Australia took to the streets of Sydney on June 2, demanding justice for Sheila Chebii following the unclear circumstances surrounding her death.

The grieving Kenyans, including friends and supporters who travelled from different cities, united to honour Sheila’s memory and seek answers regarding her passing.

The 25-year-old travelled to Australia on April 5, 2026, to further her studies after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

She reportedly secured a part-time job at Meriton Suites, a five-star establishment.

However, weeks later, on Sunday, May 17, 2026, she passed away reportedly while on duty at the hotel, leaving her loved ones with more questions than answers.

Kenyans in Australia protest over Sheila Chebii’s death

Hundreds of Kenyans who gathered in Sydney expressed their concerns and called for accountability.

The demonstration, held under the theme “Justice for Sheila Chebii, Fight for Our Sister,” saw participants call on Australian authorities to provide answers regarding the young woman’s death.

Dressed in white and black clothing and carrying Kenyan flags, the demonstrators marched along Sussex Street towards Meriton Suites, where Sheila worked.

Photos shared online showed them holding placards and banners demanding transparency, justice, and accountability.

“Sheila Chebii died while working at Meriton, and there has been no communication from authorities for 16 days,” read one of the banners.

Many expressed concern over the unanswered questions surrounding Sheila’s death and called on relevant authorities to conduct swift investigations to establish the facts.

Community leaders who addressed the gathering emphasised the importance of ensuring the safety of migrant workers and members of the diaspora.

The death of the young woman, originally from Kimumu in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, left the community and Kenyans online mourning, as they sympathised with her family, who had placed great hope in her future.

Preliminary reports indicated that Sheila fell while on duty at the hotel, but authorities have yet to release an official cause of death.

Many have raised concerns over delays in releasing details surrounding her passing, with family members and supporters calling for a thorough investigation to establish exactly what happened in the moments leading up to her death.
