Cape Town, South Africa — South African authorities have arrested a 28-year-old man after 150 live venomous scorpions were discovered concealed in his luggage at Cape Town International Airport, in what officials describe as a significant wildlife trafficking interception.
The arrest was made during a coordinated intelligence-led operation involving members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and conservation officials from CapeNature. Authorities said they acted on information suggesting that a passenger traveling through the airport was allegedly transporting protected wildlife without the required permits.
According to investigators, officers identified the suspect and conducted a search of his luggage, where they uncovered 150 live venomous scorpions hidden among personal belongings and clothing packed inside several bags.
The suspect was immediately taken into custody and is expected to face charges related to the unlawful possession and transportation of protected wildlife under South Africa’s environmental conservation laws.
Officials have not yet released details regarding the specific species of scorpions involved or their estimated value on the illegal wildlife market. The animals were safely removed from the luggage and transferred to wildlife experts for examination and care.
Authorities believe the interception may have disrupted a possible wildlife trafficking operation. Investigators are currently working to determine the origin of the scorpions, their intended destination, and whether additional individuals were involved in the suspected smuggling attempt.
