A Magistrate Court sitting in Kano State has sentenced a 35-year-old man, Mohammed Saidu, to 14 days’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of N100,000 for storing dozens of bags of human faeces outside his residence, a practice that triggered a public health scare and widespread outrage among residents.
The court also ordered Saidu to immediately evacuate all the waste from the premises and warned him against any future conduct capable of endangering public health.
Saidu was arraigned following complaints lodged by residents of his neighbourhood, who reported persistent foul odour and environmental degradation emanating from his property. Environmental health authorities subsequently intervened after confirming the severity of the situation.
During proceedings, Saidu pleaded guilty to a charge of endangering public health. He was said to have stored the waste for eventual sale to farmers who reportedly use treated human faeces as fertiliser, a practice locally known but rarely carried out at such scale within residential areas.
The presiding magistrate, Halima Wali, described the defendant’s actions as “highly inconsiderate” and a serious threat to public safety before delivering her ruling. She also ordered a visit to the property, where she personally inspected the accumulated bags of waste prior to judgment.
Residents told reporters that the stench from the building had made daily life unbearable, forcing some households to remain indoors or leave their windows shut for extended periods.
A community leader, Musa Abdullahi, said the volume of waste discovered was alarming, noting that there were “nearly 50 bags” at the peak of the incident. He added that he had previously intervened when Saidu first began the practice, but the warning was ignored after an initial compliance.
Another resident, Samaila Inuwa, said earlier attempts to resolve the matter amicably failed, forcing the community to escalate the complaint to government authorities.
“We spoke to him about it, but he didn’t stop,” Inuwa said, adding that the intervention of environmental officials had restored normalcy to the area.
Following the court’s decision, residents expressed relief that the neighbourhood had regained a cleaner and more habitable environment, while community leaders said efforts would be made to reintegrate the offender after serving his punishment.
Authorities in Kano State have continued to warn residents against improper waste handling, stressing that such practices pose serious environmental and health risks.
Kano State is one of the states where environmental health authorities have intensified enforcement actions against sanitation violations in recent years.
