Man Sues Ex-Fiancée, Mother Over Alleged Breach Of Marriage Agreement, Child Custody Dispute

A man, Ibrahim Tanko, has dragged his former fiancée, Abigail Hammam, and her mother, Hannatu, before an Upper Area Court in Mararaba Gurku, Abuja, over an alleged breach of agreement to formalise their marriage, amid a deepening custody dispute over their daughter.

Tanko, in a suit filed before the court, accused the defendants of reneging on earlier commitments that would have culminated in a formal union, despite years of relationship and family-level discussions.

According to the plaintiff, he met Hammam in 2012 and subsequently sought her hand in marriage. He said her mother granted conditional approval for the marriage rites, insisting that her daughter must not convert from Christianity to Islam and that extended family consent must first be secured.

Tanko told the court that while awaiting final family approval, the relationship progressed, resulting in the birth of a daughter.

He claimed that he had since taken full responsibility for the child’s upbringing, including her welfare and education, adding that Hammam later moved in with him with her mother’s consent pending the completion of marriage arrangements.

The plaintiff, however, alleged that the defendants later backtracked on the agreement and deliberately stalled the process, eventually abandoning plans for the marriage.

He further told the court that tensions escalated when Hammam allegedly became hostile and left his residence with their daughter for over three months, before returning to demand custody.
