A Nigerian woman has sparked debate on social media after criticising men who spend huge sums on luxury hotels for romantic encounters but refuse to financially support women in building their careers or learning a skill.
In a viral video circulating online, the woman argued that some men are willing to spend millions of naira on temporary pleasures but hesitate to provide as little as ₦100,000 to help a woman start a business or acquire a skill.
“There are some men, they spend millions to book hotels if they want to have something with you, but they cannot give you ₦100,000 to start a skill or support you,” she said.
Social media users divided
The video quickly generated mixed reactions, with many users sharing differing views on financial support, relationships and personal responsibility.
One user, identified as Immortal, argued that many men have become reluctant to offer financial assistance because of past experiences.
“A lot of men have learnt the hard way. You genuinely try to help a girl, she sees you as maga. Men no longer waste their money. These women are stingy with everything,” he wrote.
Another user, Shield, maintained that nobody should dictate how others spend their money.
“If you think it’s easy to make the money and help people with 10k, make it and do the helping. You can’t tell any woman or man how to spend their money to please themselves,” he said.
Norsh also disagreed with the woman’s position, claiming that some men have been unfairly treated despite their generosity.
“Most men would happily do this, but you’d either tag them as fools or end up saying, ‘Did I ask you to?’ Men had to learn the hard way,” he wrote.
George, another commenter, questioned why anyone should feel obligated to provide financial support.
“Why should I give you ₦100k to support you? Don’t you know our pleasure is sweeter than our pains?” he wrote.
