MTN Nigeria Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola, has come under scrutiny following comments he made about the availability of unlimited data services.
The controversy arose after Toriola stated at a recent event that unlimited data does not truly exist on mobile networks unless users are willing to pay a significant amount for it.
According to him, network operators face capacity limitations that make it difficult to provide unrestricted data access to all subscribers while maintaining acceptable service quality.

“The issue of unlimited data on mobile networks: it doesn’t exist anywhere in the world except if you’re paying a fortune. There’s a limit because you can never build enough capacity for everyone to be on an unlimited bundle and still provide a quality of service that is decent,” Toriola said.
His remarks have since generated mixed reactions, particularly from Nigerians living abroad, many of whom disagreed with his position.
Several individuals took to social media to share screenshots of what they described as affordable unlimited data plans available in countries where they reside, including the United Kingdom.
Some argued that the cost of unlimited data subscriptions in those countries represents only a few hours of work at the prevailing minimum wage, challenging the assertion that such services are available only at exorbitant prices.
The debate has also drawn attention to the Nigerian telecommunications market, where some operators are known to offer products marketed as unlimited data plans.
In addition, MTN itself is currently promoting its fibre-based internet and video solutions aimed at delivering FibreX broadband services with minimum speeds of 50Mbps to connected homes.
Available packages for such services are priced between N25,000 and N100,000, depending on the selected plan and service requirements.
The discussion has reignited conversations around broadband affordability, network capacity and the definition of unlimited data services in Nigeria and other parts of the world.
