How Dina’s husband ended up in Mombasa
In an effort to improve their situation, her husband accepted a job offer from a man he knew through the mosque where he worshipped.
“He wanted him to go to Mombasa and clear some land near a forest. It was a large piece of land that would take time to clear, so he had to live there for a few months while working and earning an income,” said Dina.
Ismael travelled to the Coast with hope for a better future, but things did not go as planned. According to Dina, his employer subjected him to poor living conditions and failed to pay him despite months of work.
Concerned about his welfare and the growing financial burden at home, Dina travelled to the Coast and brought him back.
However, she noticed that he was no longer the same. He often appeared absent-minded, and his health had significantly deteriorated.

“We came home hoping things would get better. His family refused to help him, but something was wrong because he kept complaining of severe headaches. One day, the man who had employed him called and promised to send his money, and that is where our predicament began,” narrated the heartbroken woman.
How did Ismael disappear after being sent to buy milk
The 30-year-old recalled the day her husband left to meet the employer, only to return home appearing confused and disoriented.
She said that later that night, he wanted to leave the house at around 10 pm to fetch water, but she stopped him and instead asked him to buy milk for their children.
“He seemed unusually cheerful, and I wondered what was going on. I asked myself whether he had done some casual work and earned some money. He said, ‘I just wanted everyone to be happy.’ Then he started picking up water containers. I asked him, ‘Where are you taking those containers at this hour?’ I eventually told him to buy milk worth KSh 25 instead. That is when he left the door open and ran out,” she recalled.
Dina immediately went after him, but he had already disappeared.

Dina finds husband living on the streets six months later
After months of searching, Dina finally found Ismael living on the streets, dirty and surviving by collecting rubbish.
She tried on two occasions to bring him back home, but he ran away each time, seemingly preferring life on the streets.
“My husband is now living on the streets. He is not mentally well. He carries sacks of rubbish on his back and wears dirty clothes. I do not know what to do. My children are suffering, and I can barely afford to feed them or pay their school fees,” she said.
Dina revealed that she now relies on washing people’s clothes to make ends meet.
She appealed for help in finding a solution for her husband, insisting that he does not use drugs and believes something happened to him while he was in Mombasa.
“He kept complaining of headaches and saying he could see an ocean. I still do not understand what happened to him. I need him, and my children need him too,” she said emotionally.
