NCC Chairman Seeks Presidential Incentives for Smartphone Factories in Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria – The Chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Idris Olorunnimbe, has pledged to seek presidential incentives and government support for investors willing to establish smartphone manufacturing factories in Nigeria, in a move aimed at boosting local production and accelerating digital inclusion.

Olorunnimbe made the commitment during discussions with potential investors at the Digital Africa Summit Roundtable held in Shanghai, China. He emphasized that local smartphone manufacturing would play a critical role in reducing the cost of mobile devices, creating jobs, and strengthening Nigeria’s growing digital economy.

According to him, Nigeria presents a significant investment opportunity due to its large telecommunications market and rapidly expanding internet user base. He noted that millions of Nigerians still face challenges accessing affordable smartphones, which remain essential tools for education, business, financial services, and communication.

The NCC chairman assured prospective investors that the Federal Government is willing to support initiatives that contribute to the country’s technological advancement and economic growth. He revealed that investors prepared to commence construction of smartphone manufacturing facilities before November 2026 could benefit from special government incentives, including waivers and policy support.

“I am prepared to personally take any serious investor willing to establish smartphone factories in Nigeria to meet President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to discuss possible incentives and support mechanisms,” Olorunnimbe said.

He explained that local production would help reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported devices, ease pressure on foreign exchange demand, and improve the affordability of smartphones for consumers across the country.
